This Bonfire night, my son and I volunteered with local charity, Inspire.
I love supporting charities and I often involve my son, Nathan, with this too. I think it’s important to raise children to think of others and be willing to help those less fortunate than themselves. Nathan certainly has these values built in to him already and this is something I am very proud of.
On Monday, we volunteered by collecting funds for the charity during their sponsored Firewalk event before the local fireworks display. We really enjoyed the evening!
Inspire is a charity which supports people with learning disabilities and additional support needs in the North East of Scotland. The services they offer include:
- Residential services
- Support to people in their communities
- Social support groups
- Training for employment
They do some fantastic things for people with learning disabilities… I have had the pleasure of meeting some of the people they support through the charity project I work for. Some of those people were there either collecting funds too or taking part in the Firewalk which is great to see… They clearly have a lot of love and appreciation for everything Inspire does for them.
This year, was the 8th annual fundraising Firewalk and it was a great event to be a part of again. I have previously been a participant in the Firewalk myself 6 years ago. It was a great experience especially as it’s for such a worthwhile charity and it’s not as ‘scary’ as you might think. It is definitely a fundraising activity that I would reccomend you try out!
This time my feet stayed firmly away from the hot coals though!
Nathan and I, went around the crowd with our collection bucket and he had a light up tambourine, asking for donations. There were many parents encouraging their little ones to add a few coins in to the bucket which was very cute!
The atmosphere on the night was fantastic – nervous excitement from the participants which turned to enjoyment and pride when they completed the Firewalk and the crowd cheering them on was simply the icing on the cake!
Nathan liked cheering on the participants doing the Firewalk and then shouting “Donations?” towards the crowds as we headed back to the Inspire base to watch the fireworks. He has said he enjoyed getting people’s attention and asking for donations for charity, as it was fun. It was great that he was able to be involved… Kids supporting good causes is something I adore!
Inspire are approaching their 30th anniversary so what better time to get involved by either fundraising or volunteering – give them a call on 01224 280005 to see how you can help!
