International Day of Friendship: What does friendship mean to you?

Today (30th July) marks the International Day of Friendship so I bring to you 2 special posts celebrating the meaning of friendship featuring a variety of bloggers.

International Day of Friendship was developed in 2011 by the UN general assembly based on the idea that friendship can inspire peace efforts between individuals and communities. It also recognises friendship as:

a noble and valuable sentiment in the lives of human beings around the world.” – United Nations.

You can read more about the background of the official day here.

Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to explain…– Muhammad Ali.

Friendship means something slightly different to us all and there are many different types of friendship… But overall I think we can all agree the world would be a very sad and lonely place without our friends.

In the lead up to the International Day of Friendship, I asked 10 bloggers what friendship means to them. Let’s take a look at what they had to say.

What does friendship mean to you and how important is friendship to your personal happiness?

To me friendship doesn’t have to mean seeing each other every day, I’m super busy as are most of my friends! It means being there when someone needs you as well as being there for the fun times. It also means both parties making effort to stay in contact, I can tell you I’ve lost a lot of friends as a result of that one not being fulfilled! Friendship is so important to my happiness, I don’t have a large family so some of my friends are basically that!

What is your favourite social activity to do with your friends?

It’s going to sound so boring but literally just catching up! I usually catch up with them over coffee or lunch and in the Summer it’s particularly nice to spend days out with others.

What are the 3 top qualities you want in a friend?

Honest, reliable and straight-talking (but in a nice way, not just plain rude).

Do you have a message for one (or all) of your friends that you would like to share?

I don’t have many friends as I’ve found that as I’ve gotten older and have less time I value quality over quantity. I really appreciate the friends I have because they’ve stuck around, made the effort and supported me.

What does friendship mean to you and how important is friendship to your personal happiness?

Friendship to me is having people that you can trust and rely on for anything that you may be going through. But it also means that you can easily talk to them without having to think about what your saying to them and just to feel relaxed when you are being yourself. Friendship for me is also the commitment and time that you put towards it. I depend on my friends for a lot of things so the fact that I know that they always have my back and I can turn to them if I ever need something is an essential thing for me to feel at ease and comforted for my everyday happiness, seeing as I do struggle with a touch of insecurity and uncertainty about things.

What is your favourite social activity to do with your friends?

My favourites social activities to do with my friends has got to be parties, where you can hang out with a load of different people and just be, free. Your friends are always going to be there for you no matter what as the Parties that I attend are normally in one of my friends houses so its quite funny to see things get a little bit messy when something goes wrong. This funniness that we get out of parties I feel brings us all together and makes us one. As we all have something in common at that moment in time, this makes me feel happy knowing that everyone else is happy and is enjoying themselves in the moment.

What are the 3 top qualities you want in a friend?

Trust. Good Sense of humour. Supportive.

Do you have a message for one (or all) of your friends that you would like to share?

I’d like to make my friends from home aware that even though you find me absolutely hilarious when I get angry. I do seriously mean what I say. Even if I’m not the best at sticking up for myself. I think I deserve some formality from you guys (you know exactly who you are).

What does friendship mean to you and how important is friendship to your personal happiness?

Friendship is a very big part of my life. They not only pick you up through hard times but they are also there for the good times. The many memories we make with friends are just as important with those who we hold closer than a friendship. If I didn’t have friends my anxiety would be worse than what it is now. My friends look out for me and guide me through my dark times. Without them I don’t think I’d be here now.

What is your favourite social activity to do with your friends?

I love going for walks and little picnics in the summer, hitting the beach. But in the winter it’s so nice to have a movie day and snuggle under blankets together eating rubbish food. Being a blogger my friends love having little photoshoots with me too which is something else I really enjoy doing!

What are the 3 top qualities you want in a friend?

Understanding is a must for me. I suffer with anxiety and it’s so hard when a groups of friends want to do something but you can’t because it’s holding you back. However my closest friends understand that sometimes it may be too much for me.

Someone who I can make laugh and they make me laugh too. It’s so much fun when you can have banter and just laugh at each other! It makes the days so much more fun. Somebody that won’t judge you and let’s you be you.

Do you have a message for one (or all) of your friends that you would like to share?

I tell my friends regularly how much they mean to me. But you guys are my world and I wouldn’t know where I’d be without any of you. I love you guys so much!

What does friendship mean to you and how important is friendship to your personal happiness?

To me, friendship is when two people are there for each other unconditionally. Even if you fall out with each other, both people will give their all to make amends. Friendship is extremely important to my personal happiness… When I’m down or I’m going through some stuff, having a friend to turn to eases the pain. You help each other solve each others problems and so life becomes that much easier.

What is your favourite social activity to do with your friends?

I can chat for England, and so my favourite social event would be catching up over a cup of coffee or going to a bar for a few cocktails. I don’t personally enjoying clubbing because you can not hear each other speak but going to a quiet cocktail bar is perfect.

What are the 3 top qualities you want in a friend?

Honesty, Loyalty and a good sense of humour.

Do you have a message for one (or all) of your friends that you would like to share?

If I were to write a message to anyone it would be my old school friend who I have known for years. I would tell her that I’m so grateful to her for always having my best interests at heart and I’d let her know how funny and amazing she is.

What does friendship mean to you and how important is friendship to your personal happiness?

Friendship for me means happiness. I love my husband and my children but I’m so thankful for the good friends I have in my life. You need someone to be able to laugh with, share stories with, to give you advice and sometimes just to be a shoulder to cry on and vice versa. Everyone needs a good friend who is there with them and for them through thick and thin, without judgement

What is your favourite social activity to do with your friends?

I love just going for a nice meal or a coffee, somewhere we can just chill and talk, have a giggle and talk openly about everything that’s happening in our lives.

What are the 3 top qualities you want in a friend?

Loyalty is key for me. I want a friend I can completely trust because they would be getting that in return from me. Humour is the second. I want someone who can make me giggle, who can appreciate my funny (and not so funny) jokes and just put a smile on my face. Support is the third quality. I want a friend who can advise and support me, listen to me without judgement and help me in my times of need. I would offer just as much support.

Do you have a message for one (or all) of your friends that you would like to share?

Maybe I don’t say it enough. Maybe I don’t need to say it at all because you just know. But I love and appreciate you with all my heart. I would be lost without you and am so glad you are by my side and on my side no matter what life throws my way. I am always there for you too. Once you truly have me, you have me for life.

What does friendship mean to you and how important is friendship to your personal happiness?

Friendship to me goes a lot deeper than the normal hanging out or joint common interests. The friendships I’ve built over the years are closer to a family unit than just being a friend. I can go weeks sometimes without seeing my best friends but when we do finally catch up, nothing has ever changed. We understand that life gets busy sometimes but we never judge one another. When I was going through my recent break up, my best girl friend dropped her entire life to help me move out of my apartment. I couldn’t have got through the day without her and she knew exactly what to do to ensure I stayed strong. Then when the moving task was over, she let me fall apart and cry; then she knew how to put me back together again. When she was made redundant from her job, I did the exact same for her and got her back on her feet and ready to fight a new day.
These are things you’d do without any repayment, because it’s not necessary. Friends understand you, know what’s important to you. I need my friends as much as I need my family.

My friends are my backbone, the people I call with good news and bad. Who I want to share my life wins with. They make me complete and I’m grateful each day for what they bring to my life.

What is your favourite social activity to do with your friends?

Making plans with friends is so important. The older we all get though, the less important it seems to plan the wild night’s out and the epic adventures. I think we’re all now happiest sat around the dinner table with good food & plenty to drink. We sort each others problems, talk about work, relationship dilemmas, family ties and everything in between. I think more than the activity, it’s just being present in each other lives and reminding each other that we matter and whatever is going on, we care.

What are the 3 top qualities you want in a friend?

Honesty, compassion and laughter.
A friend to me is someone who you can be completely yourself around. Someone who won’t judge you when you make a mistake and who can laugh with you over the small things and the big things.

I know my friends are true, as I’m not afraid to tell them when I’ve done something wrong.

I can talk to my friends about anything, and I know that the advice I receive will be true and what they feel is best for me. They know me better than I know myself.

Do you have a message for one (or all) of your friends?

There’s probably a thousand things I should say to each and everyone of my friends, but I think the most simplest answer to this is… Thank You. Thank you for being there, thank you for putting up with me and my ever present dramas. Thank you for everything you do and for everything you are. You’ve no idea what you mean to me and how you keep my world turning. Forever indebted and forever grateful for the love you bring.
